Omaha likes us!

I was a little heartbroken that I couldn't attend the Nebraska premiere of my Nebraskan-filmed-doc last night at the Omaha Film Festival. I would have loved to talk with the crowd and see the reaction in-person but unfortunately after spending a lot of money making a movie there's not always much left for airfare/hotel/etc. So I had to sit in Portland and watch from a distance. I was happy to read a mention in The Omaha Reader where Michael J. Krainak had some nice things to say:
...probably the two best, most unified shorts this bunch, Boaz Frankel’s Meet the Beetle and Brian Roma’s She’s Cool.
A paragraph or two later he added:
Be amazed at Frankel’s creativity in making the potential extinction of an insect seem more than relevant circa original schoolhouse musical theatre...
So thanks Michael! And is there anyone else out there who saw my film last night in Omaha? Let me know! I'd love to hear what you thought!

Back from Nevada City!

I just got back from the Wild & Scenic Film Festival where Meet the Beetle premiered. The festival was a blast! The film screened twice - the second time at a special kids screening where we led the audience in a high energy sing-a-long:

A lot of folks came up to me throughout the festival sharing their thoughts on the film and it was so exciting to share it with a few hundred new friends. Stay tuned for more photos coming soon!

Our First Review

Meet the Beetle is premiering one week from today at the Wild & Scenic Film Festival in Nevada City, CA. Leading up to the festival, the local paper has been featuring reviews of some of the upcoming films. Here's what Chuck Jaffee had to say about our little movie:

“Meet the Beetle” is so cute, it's my favorite film at this year's Wild & Scenic Film Festival. Face it. Raising awareness about daunting issues, amongst so many daunting issues, stresses the entertainment zone that nurtures movie goers. Creative documentary techniques have made great inroads, but most of the time, you can massage a substantive documentary only so far. Half grade school musical and half standard report, “Meet the Beetle” fuels a perfect issue delivery engine.

He likes it! I'll be honest - I almost teared up as I was reading it. Read the rest of Chuck's review over at Union.com.

Wear Your Very Own Beetle!

I wanted to create some sort of swag for the premiere of Meet the Beetle next month and I decided to make buttons.

Not only are they small, cute, and wearable but on these 1" button the image of the beetle is essentially life size. I thought it could be a neat way to identify with the insect and raise awareness. I got permission from National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore (who's featured in the film) to use one of his wonderful photos of the Salt Creek Tiger Beetle.

I opened the box of buttons when it arrived earlier today and that's when it struck me. This box contains a thousand little depictions of the beetle - that's over three times the number of beetles that emerged this past summer. I have more buttons in my apartment right now than there are Salt Creek Tiger Beetles in the world. Pretty crazy. Anyway, if you want a beetle button you can track me down at the Wild & Scenic Film Festival. Or just send me an email and ask nicely.
